Over
the course of the last few years, there have been dramatic changes in the way in which the
world is run. There have been changes in governing systems of countries throughout
the globe, as the former communist states and military regimes throughout the developing
world have begun to move towards forms of government that more accurately reflect the will
of the people that they govern.
There
has also been a revaluation of political philosophies, and in particular, of the belief
that the progress of mankind can be brought about simply by the actions of government.
The role of the individual, and of individual communities, has taken on a revived
importance, as both people and government have come to accept that the progress of
mankind, in social, economic, cultural and other fields, depends to a very considerable
extent upon the endeavor of individual human beings.
Three
decades ago, before the people went to the gulf countries for employment, Puthiyangadi
village was struck with poverty. It lacked modern schools, housing, hospitals, roads
and all other essential components of a developed society. The energies of the
villages people were largely devoted to the task of surviving and not to the
fashioning of a better future. The gulf revenues have made the development possible in all
fields especially in the field of education.
The
local Muslim Jama-ath and Christian community considered education as the highest priority
of Puthiyangadi village. So the Muslim Jama-ath established a primary school at the
adjacent of Juma Masjid in 1906 and the Christian community established other two
primary schools. The majority of the children terminated their education because of
the inconvenience for higher education. Those who went for higher education were mainly
boys and for this they went to the Madayi Government High School which is 4kms away from
the village. As a result in those days, the girls of this village couldn't proceed
to higher education.
The
year 1979, proved to be a great milestone in the improvement in the educational field of
this village. In this year a high school named Puthiyangadi Jama-ath High School was
setup under the management of Puthiyangadi Muslim Jama-ath Committee .
Janab,C.H.Muhammed Koya (late) who was the Deputy Chief Minister and the Education
Minister at that time, sanctioned this school. Due to the sanctioning of this
school by him, now there is not a single person in this village who haven't completed
their secondary education. Since there are no sufficient primary schools in
accordance with the population of this village, most of the children depend on Madayi GMUP
School for their primary education. For the above reason, the GMUP School is one
among the schools in the Kannur Dist having the highest number of students.
The
other two primary schools run by the Christian Community are Puthiyangadi West L.P.School
and BEMLP school. These two schools play a key role in the development of the
primary education of this village. Both schools are Government unaided.
A
few individual organizations have been setup here. One among them is Malabar
Development Society which runs an English medium high school alongwith a DPham institute
and an orphanage in Mottambram, Puthiyangadi. Three computer institutes exists
in this village namely Al-Falah Computer Institute, a free computer training
institute setup by the Madayi Grama Panchayath Board at the C.H.Muhammed Koya memmorial
soudum and one in the Puthiyangadi Jama-ath High School.
The
Puthiyangadi Dars Committee have been playing a very important role in the development of
both basic and religious education. They were the one who provided building
facilities for the Madayi GMUP School. Six religious centers including an
Arabic College and a nursery school are being run by this Committee. Decades ago, a
"Dars" for religious higher education which is very famous in the Malabar area
was also established here by this committee. They provide free education to more
than 2,000 students. Other committees like Chootad and Vaadikkal Muslim Jama-ath are
also provide the same type of services. There is an Islamic studies center which is
run by Payangadi Wadi Huda Islamic Complex.
